Panja (Mozambique)

Coordinates: 20 ° 3 '  S , 34 ° 10'  O Panja is a small village in the province of Sofala in Mozambique . The next larger city is Beira , around 85 kilometers away.

The Sofala province is the poorest region in the country of Mozambique and the population in the remote settlements is particularly marked by the frequency of diseases such as malaria , tuberculosis and gastrointestinal diseases. The residential huts are thatched or covered with corrugated iron. There is a small hospital ward in the settlement that is supported by the relief organization Austria . No detailed population figures are available. The press freedom is greatly limited and independent media be hindered.

The people live exclusively from agriculture and animal husbandry. Bananas, citrus fruits, sisal and oil palms are also grown. The drinking water and fuel supply are the main problems in the region. The climate is hot and humid, especially during the summer monsoon from October to February.
