Papaya (song)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Papaya is a fusion track composed by the Polish singer Urszula Dudziak and which became a hit in the disco genre in 1976 . In 2008 a dance based on the same piece became popular.

Dudziak played the piece for their first solo album in 1975 in an arrangement by Michal Urbaniak with the participation of Gerry Brown , Basil Fearrington , Harold Ivory Williams and Joe Caro . The record company Arista coupled the song with the electronically processed scat vocals from the fusion LP Urszula and landed an unexpected hit with it. The piece stayed in the charts for five weeks and made it to number 36.

As Ute Büchter-Römer has shown in her musicological analysis, this success can be explained by the rhythmic conciseness of the melody, its simplicity (and the repetitions of its A section), the funk rhythms used and a “variety in the thematic frame of reference”.

A remix of the song was in the Philippine TV show Pilipinas, Game KNB? shown as video. Filipino soldiers can be seen on it, throwing their weapons away when the song is played and dancing to the rhythm of the music. In the meantime, the video has not only become popular all over Southeast Asia, but has also found its way around the world and has also found its way into American shows such as Good Morning America , where guests dance lively to the music of papaya. It now has cult status and is viewed hundreds of thousands of times on video portals such as YouTube . Papaya is compared to hits like Lambada or Macarena by the global press and internet services .
