Paper engineer is the term for a graduate engineer specializing in paper engineering / paper technology.

education

Based on the basic course in mechanical engineering or process engineering , the main course of study at technical universities is followed by the specialization in paper technology or paper production. It includes elements of physical and chemical process engineering as well as material, machine and plant engineering. At the Karlsruhe Cooperative State University, paper engineers are trained in the dual system.

Field of work

Paper engineers work in the pulp and paper industry as well as in the paper processing industry and the supply industry. Your tasks are in the

Pulp and paper industry

  • Management of areas or the entire production plant of pulp and paper mills.
  • Management of research and development.
  • Planning and implementation of modifications and new systems as well as their commissioning.
  • Testing of new processes and machines to increase product quality and productivity.

Supply industry (mechanical engineering, chemistry, clothing industry)

  • Planning and sale of machines and plants for pulp and paper manufacture.
  • Development and sale of chemical auxiliaries for paper production.
  • Development and sale of paper machine clothing (fabrics and felts)

paper processing industry (e.g. printing or corrugated cardboard industry)

Career opportunities

According to the Association of German Paper Mills, paper engineers are wanted. The pulp and paper industry supports students in their main studies through scholarships from associations or companies. The individual career opportunities in the paper industry depend on the structure of the individual companies and the personality of the individual.

University graduates begin their careers either in staff or line positions. As assistant to the operations manager, you supervise a department of the company. As assistant to the technical director, you take on special tasks under your own responsibility.

After appropriate professional experience, paper engineers can take over the management of the company laboratory for process, entry and exit control. This also includes technical advice to the processing industry. Paper engineers whose field of interest lies in research can take on leading tasks in development. Others work as managers in operational planning.

Most of these careers offer the paper engineer the opportunity to become operations manager. A possible top position is the management of the entire company as technical director. With the appropriate qualifications, paper engineers can even be appointed as managing directors or on the board.

There is an international job market for paper engineers with language skills.
