A paper knife is a knife-shaped object used to cut paper .

Untrimmed book

Paper knives used to be used, among other things, to cut open book pages of untrimmed books , which were often folded (folded with the help of tools or machines) and bound with eight sheets of printed sheets . In order to be able to read the inside pages, the sheets had to be cut open.

In contrast to the letter opener , the blade of the paper knife is rounded at the tip and consists mostly of horn , bone , formerly ivory , rarely metal.
