PSI 1574

Papyrus PSI 1574 is a papyrus fragment from the 6th or 7th century. It shows parts of a representation of the nursing Maria ( Maria lactans ). The fragment is approximately 10 cm × 10.5 cm. It was found in the ancient city of Antinoopolis in Egypt and is one of the earliest surviving Christian illustrations with this motif. The Coptic origin of the papyrus, like the early wall paintings, indicates a borrowing from ancient Egyptian mythology ( Isis with the Horus boy ).

The fragment is in the Istituto Papirologico "Girolamo Vitelli" in Florence with the inventory number PSI Inv. 2458.
