Paraa is the only settlement in the middle of the Murchison Falls National Park in northwest Uganda on the south bank of the Nile not far from Lake Albert .

Since all residents are either employees of the national park administration, or employees of the campsite, the lodge or the ferry service across the Victoria Nile (or family members living there with them), we can only speak of a settlement, not a village. About 300 people live in Paraa, there is a runway for small planes, a primary school and a gas station.

The settlement was expanded at the end of the 1950s, but all buildings were completely devastated during the Ugandan civil war and the subsequent turmoil and only rebuilt from 1991 onwards.

The name Paraa means something like place of the hippos in the language of the Bunyoro, of which there are actually very many there.
