Parque Anchorena

Summer residence of the Uruguayan President

The Parque Anchorena is a park as well as the summer residence of the President of Uruguay .

This nature reserve is located in the southwest of Uruguay in the Colonia department on the left bank of the Río San Juan near its confluence with the Río de la Plata . The distance to the eastern capital Montevideo is 208 km.

The building that is now the presidents' summer residence is the former estate of Aarón de Anchorena . In the 1370 hectare park there is a 75 meter high stone tower with 320 steps, the Torre Anchorena . It was originally designed as a lighthouse, but never fulfilled this function.

The Parque Anchorena can be reached via Ruta 21, which connects Colonia del Sacramento with Carmelo, where the entrance to the park is at kilometer 198. It is also possible to access the river from the Río de la Plata.
