Parque España de la Verónica was a soccer stadium in Mexico City , the name of which was derived from both its owner ( Real Club España ) and its location (on Calzada de la Verónica ).

prehistory

In the early days of Mexican club football , championship games were played on the grounds of the Reforma Athletic Club , which at that time was still in the Bosque de Chapultepec (today the home of the sports and social club Deportivo Chapultepec is located here ). This venue was a pure football field, which had neither a grandstand nor any steps, so that at that time the audience was still gathered around the field.

In 1915, Club España acquired a site on the exclusive Paseo de la Reforma , which was only about one kilometer from the then home of Reforma AC. There the Españistas prepared a football field that quickly became the new center of Mexican football. The place where Mexico's first football stand was built in 1917 was known as Parque España de la Reforma (after its owner and the Paseo de la Reforma where the pitch was located).

history

The steadily increasing interest in football finally encouraged the board of Club España to purchase a more spacious area in the immediate vicinity and to build larger stands that could accommodate around 8,000 spectators. The new sports field was located on Calzada de la Verónica (today's Avenida Melchor Ocampo ) and was named Parque España de la Verónica, based on its owner and its location .

The stadium was officially opened on May 2, 1925 with two games. The foreplay took place between the veterans of España A and España B. The following, official opening game contested the then current teams of España and Necaxa with the following line-ups:

España: Iracheta - Antonio Arechederra, Luciano Arechederra - Riera, Roberto Lecanda, Noriega - Chacón, Sisniega, Cacharro, Giralt, Saro.

Necaxa: Garfias - Raúl González, Carranza - Crowle, Jardón, Marure - Chon Pérez, García, Pepe Ruíz, Miguel Ruíz, “La Coneja” Cuevas.

Until the opening of Parque Necaxa in September 1930, Parque España de la Verónica was the most important football venue in Mexico City , which was still of great importance in the 1930s. In addition to a large number of championship games, two international matches for the Mexican national team were played here. The first took place on March 18, 1934 in front of 10,000 spectators against Cuba and was won 4-1. Opponent in the second game on September 25, 1937 was the USA team, which was sent home 5-1.
