The Parque de Invierno (in English Winter Park ) is a park in Oviedo , the capital of the Spanish province of Asturias . It covers an area of twelve hectares. and is thus the largest park in the city. The park is located south of the core city of Oviedo, immediately south of the university campus. The park is located in a valley on both sides of a stream that flows further downstream into the Rio Gafo . In the valley floor immediately north of the mentioned stream, a straight hiking trail without noticeable gradient, which is the beginning of the Senda Verde , a 7.8 km long hiking and cycling path, runs as the main traffic axis in the broader sense . It is the route of a former railway line. From this path, serpentine hiking trails give way to the hills. The hiking trails over the creek in the valley floor are connected by three wooden bridges, whereby the most striking bridge by far connects hiking trails at a greater height, spanning the main hiking trail in the valley floor.

Concept of the park

The park is designed for the active leisure activities of the visitors and is frequented to a large extent by the city's population all year round. The paths are ideal for hiking, jogging, walking the dogs, etc., the flat path in the valley floor is also suitable for cycling, roller skating, etc. In the northern area, a facility for skateboarders and BMX riders has been created. The park area consists mainly of meadows that can be used as sunbathing and play areas, with isolated groups of trees. Standing water, flower beds, etc. are missing. In the park there is a playground, a weight training facility with various equipment and on the paths every few hundred meters there are wooden fitness facilities (chin-up rigs, etc.) as known from so-called fitness trails in Germany. Since the paths are paved, a path made of bark mulch was laid parallel to Senda Verde. In addition, there are objects of art and a historically Asturian Hórreo in the park .

The Senda Verde

The Senda Verde begins (or ends) in Parque de Invierno. The origin of this "green path" is an old railway line. The FEVE railway line used to run here and connected Oviedo with the Collanzo – Pravia line. The Senda Verde is 7.8 km long, of which only a few hundred meters inside the park, and runs through the rural suburbs of the city of Oviedo. The special thing is that this route, which is completely closed to motorized traffic, has no significant gradient or incline and yet crosses a mountainous landscape. As is customary with railway lines, differences in relief were overcome or undercut by tunnels or bridges. This makes it ideal for less trained cyclists and joggers. The A 63/66 autobahn and its feeder roads are also bridged by an impressive wooden bridge, or underpasses. In the further course only a few less frequented village streets cross the hiking trail. In the last third, mountains are crossed by four tunnels that were once blasted into the rock. At intervals of a few kilometers, like in Parque de Invierno, there are drinking water fountains where hikers or athletes can feast. Around three kilometers west of the park, a former train station is operated as a typical Asturian restaurant.
