Passavant ring bead

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Passavant ring bulge or Passavant's ring bulge (named after Philipp Gustav Passavant , 1815–1893) is the form of contraction of the upper throat constrictor that occurs during the act of swallowing . This contraction as well as the movement of the soft palate (it rises and rests against the Passavant ring bulge.) Lead to the closure of the upper respiratory tract, so that food and drink cannot get into the nose.

Anatomical processes

During the formation of the Passavant ring bulge, the pars pterygopharyngea of the musculus constrictor pharyngis superior (the upper pharyngeal constrictor ) contracts, which thickens the posterior and lateral walls of the nasopharynx and thus leads them closer to the center. Due to the contraction of the tensor veli palatini muscle , the soft palate moves backwards so that the oropharynx is completely closed towards the nasopharynx.

clinic

In the case of soft palate paralysis , for example after diphtheria , this closing mechanism of the upper airways is insufficient and food or liquid enters the nose. The same happens after a tumor has been removed or due to defects after an accident.

therapy

If parts of the soft palate are lost, function can be restored by inserting an obturator . A resection prosthesis is used in the upper jaw to replace the defect.
