Pauper houses

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pauperhäuser were municipal boarding schools for poor ( Latin pauper = poor) children. The term probably comes from the old East Prussia .

In Königsberg every city school had a municipal pauper's house. The Kneiphöfsche was rebuilt before 1580, the old town in 1631 on the Danzig cellar. 20 to 40 poor students lived there. The houses were maintained by legates and donations from the citizens .

The Pauperes were the backbone of school choirs, carolers, and funerals.
