Notch planing bench

A pitchscharte is a thin and flexible chip, planed from resinous wood, about 30 to 40 cm long and 5 to 10 cm wide, which was used in the resin extraction to remove the resin that emerged from the tree wound after the bark was removed (Laugh) to direct a vessel ( pitch mug ) where it was caught and collected.

Pitch notches were planed in winter by the pitchers using a notch planer from a piece of pine wood that had just grown . The piece of wood was clamped on a bench and then a thin chip was removed over the entire length of the block of wood by means of a lever with the notch. After drying and tying (for easier transport) pitch nicks could be used for several years.
