Pedra Azul

Pedra Azul is a national park in Brazil . It is located in the state of Espírito Santo . The national park covers an area of ​​1,240 hectares and was established in 1991 to protect nature and its biodiversity in this area. It contains the granite rock of the same name, Pedra Azul , Portuguese for “blue rock”, which consists of a single stone formation and has a total height of 1822  m .

Temperatures in this region are between 7.3 and 9.4 ° C in winter and between 25.3 and 27.8 ° C in summer. The altitude of the place varies between 1250 meters in the visitor center and 1909 meters at Pico do Pedra das Flores , Portuguese for top of the flower rock, the highest point in the region.

Naming

Due to a lichen plant, the color of the rock can appear bluish, greenish or even yellowish, depending on the sunlight. This can happen up to 31 times a day, depending on the climate. The Pedra Azul has existed in its current form for around 550 million years.

The national park has a great biodiversity, which is characterized by the Mata Atlântica . It is home to animals such as the anteater , the bearded monkey , the puma , the ocelot , toucans , the highly poisonous jararaca and various types of lizards . The vegetation is particularly striking because of the wild species of orchids , cedars , ferns and bromeliads .

The national park and its surroundings are very popular as a recreation area. 5% of the area of ​​the national park is accessible to tourists. There are pousadas (hotels) in its vicinity and it is also possible to visit the rock by prior arrangement. Natural pools of water can be reached via Trilhas , which is Portuguese for forest trails.
