Peer Name Resolution Protocol

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRP) is a network protocol for name resolution based on the peer-to-peer model.

It should enable the publication of names and their resolution into addresses without a server , as is necessary in the Domain Name System .

The protocol was developed by Microsoft and first implemented in Windows Vista , where it replaces NetBEUI . It was introduced in Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 3 , but has to be activated there explicitly. It can only be used under IPv6 or when using Teredo and is deactivated by default in Vista. Name resolution is possible, however, since the service is started dynamically.

It has similarities with the peer-to-peer network Pastry and uses a variation of the prefix routing.

Under Microsoft Windows 7 , PNRP is used in conjunction with the Remote Desktop Protocol for remote support, and enables uncomplicated bridging of a network address translation .

Microsoft provides the specification of the protocol as an Open Specification . PNRP was removed from Windows 10 from version 1809.
