Penicillum ( Latin diminutive of brush) (sometimes also Penicillium or Penicillium) describes in zoology a dense hairbrush on the underside of the fourth antennae in the males of some tiger beetles . The following species have a penicillum in the genus Lophyra : Lophyra bertolonia , Lophyra fasciculicornis , Lophyra flexuosa , Lophyra monteiroi , Lophyra latelimbata and Lophyra differens from the Afrotropic and Palearctic as well as the two species Lophyra fuliginosa and Lophronsyra from the Oriental striatifronsyra . The function of the structures is still unknown. It may be sensilla or bristle related to mating. By far not all of the over 2,300 species of tiger beetle have a penicillum. The presence is limited to around 30 species in the Cicindelini tribe . Of these, Lophyra flexuosa is the only one found in the Palearctic.

Other brush-like structures in insects are sometimes referred to as penicillum.
