Peter Baumann (born January 29, 1953 in Berlin ) is a German electronic musician and music publisher. As a member of the electronic music group Tangerine Dream , he wrote an important chapter in German rock history. His synthesizer sound experiments were groundbreaking for electronic rock music of the 1980s.

Peter Baumann's first solo album was created in 1976; the music contained on it was strongly based on the line of the Tangerine Dream-Sound. Baumann left the group at the end of 1977 in order to concentrate fully on his solo career and moved to the USA. There he founded his own music label "Private Music" in 1984 and in this way offered well-known musicians the opportunity to realize projects that they could not implement with established record companies for contractual or work-specific reasons. So published u. a. Yanni , Patrick O'Hearn , Ravi Shankar , Andy Summers (Police), Jerry Goodman, Suzanne Ciani, Philip Glass , Eddie Jobson , Leo Kottke and even Baumann's former colleagues from Tangerine Dream (including the albums Lily on the Beach , Melrose , Miracle Mile and Optical Race ) exceptional sound recordings on "Private Music". Baumann sold his company to BMG in the late 1990s and now lives in California on the proceeds from the sale. He then devoted himself to topics such as cognitive science, evolution theory, philosophy, humanism, psychology, genetics, art and anthropology with his Baumann Foundation, which he founded in 2009. After the death of Edgar Froese from Tangerine Dream in January 2015, Peter Baumann worked with the remaining musicians after about 37 years as an active musician on a Tangerine Dream music project.
