Deposit locks are mainly found on shopping carts and were introduced in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Deposit locks can also be found in lockers in public sports facilities such as swimming pools.

Technical development

The first deposit locks were bulky boxes in which a coin had to be inserted into a slide and then this slide had to be moved in order to be able to use the shopping cart.

The next generation of deposit locks brought a decisive, improved ease of use, since a convenient one-hand operation was now possible by pushing the coin directly into the deposit lock.

Based on the principle of one-hand operation, the current development of deposit locks is determined by an attractive design and the integration of the deposit lock in the shopping cart.

In the case of deposit locks for lockers, the development is moving in the direction of different deposit systems, e.g. the possibility of using different coins or chip cards or the like.
