Phenomena (waltz)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Phenomena is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op.193). The work was performed for the first time on February 17, 1857 in the Sofienbad Hall in Vienna.

Remarks

The work was written for Mardi Gras in 1857 and premiered on the occasion of the technicians' ball. However, the premiere took place in a shortened form. Introduction and coda were not yet completed. Strauss probably did not finish the waltz until the summer of the same year during his stay in Russia. The naming is derived from natural phenomena. Musically, Johann Strauss again used the modern form of the waltz, so disapproved of by his critics, in which he was also based on Richard Wagner and Franz Liszt .

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 9 minutes and 5 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
