Phaung Daw U Pagoda

The Phaung-Daw-U-Pagoda ( Burmese ဖောင်တော် ဦး ဘုရား , pronounced: pʰàʊɴ dɔ̀ ʔú pʰəjá) is a Buddhist temple complex on Inle Lake in Myanmar .

description

The pagoda is located on the west bank of Inle Lake near the town of Ywama. The modern main building has a square floor plan and a three-tiered roof with bays at the corners and in the middle of the square, which initiates the transition to the octagonal roof structure, which in turn is crowned by an octagonal stupa with a Hti .

In a high hall supported by slender golden pillars stands a canopy with the altar for five Buddha statues from the 12th century, around which many legends and a thick layer of gold have formed. The shape of the figures can hardly be recognized; Countless layers of gold leaf, applied by believers over time, have turned them into misshapen nuggets of gold.

Accident site

The latest legend has its origins in a disaster during the annual ship procession in September or October : when the king's barge with the five Buddhas capsized in 1965, they fell into the water and were quickly found in the shallow lake - except for one that had apparently disappeared. When the four found statues were brought back to Phaung Daw U, the fifth Buddha, believed lost, had already made his way back to his place on the altar. Since that time only the four less strange Buddhas go on the festival trip around the lake. A nautical mark marks the scene of the accident.

The garage for the king's barge is in the immediate vicinity of the pagoda.
