Philoxenus of Eretria
Philoxenus of Eretria ( Greek Φιλόξενος ) was an ancient painter of the late 4th century BC. Chr.
Little is known about Philoxenus. According to Pliny ( naturalis historia 35, 110) he was a student of Nicomachus and contemporary of Alexander the Great , whose victory over Darius III. he is said to have captured in a painting that perhaps served as a model for the Alexander mosaic found in Pompeii . According to Pliny, he also painted a representation of three satyrs . Furthermore, a hunting scene in Palermo can possibly be assigned to Philoxenus.
