Phoenix Mail is a free , slim e-mail program for POP3 / SMTP with Transport Layer Security . Many users consider it advantageous that the program does not work with any database. All e-mails are stored unchanged in MSG format on the hard drive, the address books in a handy CSV file. As all data is saved separately from the system, Phoenix Mail can also be operated on a removable storage medium (e.g. USB stick ). It also runs on all Windows versions from Windows Vista (slightly restricted also under Windows XP with SP3 or under Linux with Wine).

origin

Phoenix Mail (the original version) was programmed by Michael Haller with Delphi 3 in the years 1998–1999 and distributed as freeware (open source). Michael Haller published the source code , making it possible for every ambitious programmer to further develop the mail client according to their own wishes. He is no longer working on it himself. The offer was accepted by several people, so there are now various programs under the name Phoenix Mail.

Two development teams have settled at Sourceforge.net. One worked on the original Phoenix Mail 0.93xx and is known as the PMO team. The second developed its own Phoenix Mail version under the name RoundAbout . This has since been expanded to include many functions and is available in various languages from the international members.

A purely German version is maintained by Roland Ruder and is identified by the abbreviation "2020".

Further development

The three versions that emerged from the first Phoenix Mail generation now differ greatly. Nevertheless, the structures in which the mailboxes are stored on the user's PC are largely compatible.
