Under phonotyping refers to writing down on tape recorded or plate dictations (phono dictations).

The phonotype almost completely replaced stenography in dictating letters in the early 1980s.

Digital dictation machines

Today digital dictation machines are preferred . They are connected to the PC via the USB interface . This has the following advantages:

  • Choice between conference and dictation recording possible
  • the dictation machine does not have to be picked up
  • automatic start / stop mode means that the dictation machine only starts recording when you speak.

The PC dictation

With PC dictation, the recording is saved on the hard drive and is transcribed. This requires special software and a plug-in card . PC dictation has the following advantages:

  • you don't need cassettes
  • you don't need a playback device
  • Dictations can be sent by email.

The dictation rules (DIN 5009)

There are dictation rules according to DIN 5009 and design rules according to DIN 5008 for a reasonable and economical phonotype .
