The DIN standard DIN 5009 (dictation rules) defines rules for dictation that is suitable for writing. It first appeared in June 1983, at that time under the name Rules for Phonodictation . In December 1996, the simplified revision came out.

For example, DIN 5009 specifies how highlighting, character, paragraph and page formatting as well as digits, numbers and dates are dictated . A variant of the postal spelling table is given for spelling . (The spelling word "Eszett" was added for the letter of the same name " ß ".) According to the standard, the spelling table is unsuitable for speech recognition systems . For the correct application of the rules according to DIN 5009, it is helpful if the dictator has also mastered the writing and layout rules for word processing according to DIN 5008 .

The German dictation rules are preferably used for spelling on the phone, in radio communications and for phonotyping . In international radio communications, however, the spelling alphabet published by the International Civil Aviation Organization is mostly used.
