Piazzale Donatello

Piazzale Donatello is the name of a square in Florence that was created in the 19th century when the medieval city walls of Florence were demolished and the boulevard of Viali di Circonvallazione was created.

The large, oval square with a hilly slope in the middle encloses the non-Catholic cemetery founded in 1828, today known as Cimitero degli Inglesi . The Florentine architect and town planner Giuseppe Poggi created a picturesque "island of the dead" in the traffic transmission here around 1870, which is said to have inspired Arnold Böcklin for his painting of the same name.

The square, named after the sculptor Donatello , and its surroundings became a decidedly artistic quarter of the city from 1874, and since 1949 an art exhibition organized by the Gruppo Donatello association has been held here every June .
