Piedfort

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A piedfort ( French pied fort 'strong foot'), also known as a thick cut or thick piece , is a coin with usually twice the material thickness (and thus twice the weight) compared to normal coinage. As a particularly carefully manufactured directional piece ( directional coin ), the piedfort served as a reference standard. Piedforts are usually stamped for collector's purposes with stamps that are also used for regular issues and are particularly common in France, where in the 20th century many commemorative coins appeared in larger numbers than Piedforts.
