Militära underrättelse- och säkerhetstjänsten ( MUST ; German: Military Intelligence and Security Service ) is the intelligence service of the Swedish armed forces . It reports directly to the Ministry of Defense and thus to the Minister of Defense and has been headed by Major General Lena Hallin since 2019 , who replaced Major General Gunnar Karlson .

history

En svensk tiger

The Statens Informationsstyrelse (SIS) existed from 1940 to 1945 ; he is considered the predecessor of today's MUST. The SIS, which was very active during the Second World War, was subordinate to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but also worked with the Ministry of Defense. En svensk tiger was a slogan used to keep important information secret in Sweden during the Second World War . The symbol of the tiger known to this day was created in 1941 by Bertil Almqvist on behalf of the SIS.

Working method

MUST consists of two departments: the UND (from underrättelseverksamheten , German: news operation), which is responsible for the intelligence service, and the SÄK (from säkerhetsskyddet , German: security protection), responsible for military security. The UND obtains information for decision-making from Intelligence Headquarters and the Department of Defense. He also provides information to Swedish military associations at home and abroad. The SÄK deals among others with the protection of military information and the identification and examination of persons.

The most secret part of the service is the KSI ( Kontoret för särskild inhämtning , German: Office for special gatherings), which is primarily responsible for the recruitment of agents .

MUST works to a large extent with the other defense authorities, above all with the Försvarets radioanstalt ( FRA ) (German: "Funkeinrichtung für national defense"), which is responsible for technical reconnaissance and surveillance. The head of MUST is currently Major General Lena Hallin. The majority of the employees in the MUST are officers, but the service has a relatively high proportion of civilian employees compared to other units within the Swedish military.
