Walther Klemm (born June 18, 1883 in Karlsbad , Austria-Hungary , † August 11, 1957 in Weimar ) was a German painter , graphic artist and illustrator .

life and work

Walther Klemm was born on June 18, 1883 in Karlsbad, Bohemia. After Emil Orlik's encouragement , he studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts with Anton von Kenner , Kolo Moser and others. At the same time, he studied art history at the University of Vienna with Julius von Schlosser . The first color woodcuts were made around 1903.

From 1904, Klemm participated in the exhibition of the Vienna Secession . In the same year he moved to Prague . There he met Carl Thiemann . In Libotz near Prague both formed a studio community. In 1908, Klemm and Thiemann moved to the Dachau artists' colony . In 1910, Klemm became a member of the Berlin Secession .

In 1913 he was appointed professor for graphics at the University of Fine Arts in Weimar . A large number of illustrations and depictions of animals were created in Weimar . Klemm maintained close contacts with Count Harry Kessler , Theodor Hagen , Alexander Olbricht , Ludwig von Hofmann and the animal painter and writer Otto Boris . Oswald Baer , Horst de Marées and Fritz Lattke were among his students . During the time of National Socialism he was continuously represented from 1937 to 1944 participant in the Great German Art Exhibition in the House of German Art in Munich, including in 1942 with the oil painting Bach im Dachauer Moos . After the Second World War , Walther Klemm made significant contributions to the reconstruction of the Weimar Academy of Art. In 1952 he became an honorary senator at the Weimar University of Architecture and Construction. In 1953 he received the Nordgau Culture Prize of the city of Amberg in the “Fine Arts” category.

Walther Klemm was a member of the German Association of Artists . He died in Weimar in 1957.
