En svensk tiger
En svensk tiger was a slogan in Sweden that encouraged Swedish citizens to keep secrets from abroad during the Second World War .
The sentence is ambiguous , because the word svensk means both Swedish and Schwede / Schwedin and Tiger on the one hand denotes the tiger , on the other hand it is the present tense for silent (tiga). In this respect, the saying means both “A Swedish tiger” and “A Swede is silent”.
The poster with a yellow and blue striped tiger , known in Sweden , was created in 1941 by Bertil Almqvist on behalf of Statens Informationsstyrelse .
The image is protected by copyright until 2042. The copyrights are held by the Swedish Beredskapsmuseum (standby museum). From 1997 to 2007, a legal dispute about this between the Beredskapsmuseum and the Swedish armed forces , which had registered the tiger as a trademark, was fought and then decided in favor of the Beredskapsmuseum .
