Controversy in pop culture

The pile of shame is controversial in internet forums and blogs. In the subjective considerations, attempts are made to fathom the “height” of the pile, symptoms and causes, but strategies for combating it are also discussed. Other authors argue that the pile of shame also has advantages.

The causes for this are u. a. identified the following issues:

  • an abundance of the media offer , which results from the lower expenditure in procurement (digital payment and free shipping) and, above all, low purchase costs through discount offers , such as " Steamsales ", Black Friday or so-called "bundles" (e.g. Humble Bundle ) . Since there is an oversupply among the various forms of media, there is also cannibalization between them.
  • Shortage of the resource "time"
  • Excessive demands and self-imposed pressure to perform and the resulting lack of drive

In December 2014, the Internet portal Kotaku carried out a survey of 1,400 players that on average 40% of the games bought in the last 12 months had not been played. The results of an analysis of the Steam gaming platform were similar , according to which Steam users worldwide registered a total of around 780 million games in their libraries, of which, however, 37% had never been started.
