The 2nd stage of the Tour de France 2018 took place on July 8, 2018. The flat stage led over 185 kilometers from Mouilleron-Saint-Germain to La Roche-sur-Yon .
Sprint winner of the stage was Peter Sagan ( Bora-hansgrohe ), who also took over the yellow and green jerseys , ahead of Sonny Colbrelli ( Bahrain-Merida ) and Arnaud Démare ( Groupama-FDJ ). On the last kilometer, the previous overall leader Fernando Gaviria was stopped by a fall.
The stage was marked by Sylvain Chavanel's attempt to break away, who won the intermediate sprint for the points assessment and the bonus sprint Point Bonus 14 kilometers from the finish and was caught shortly afterwards. Chavanel was awarded the red number for his escape . He was accompanied for the first 30 kilometers by Michael Gogl , who fell back after a knee treatment by the tour doctor, and Dion Smith . Smith, who won the only mountain classification in the fourth category in the sprint and, due to his better position in the overall classification, took over the dotted jersey from Kévin Ledanois with the same points and dropped back shortly afterwards to stay fresh for the team time trial of the third stage .
Two drivers gave up the race: Tsgabu Grmay with stomach problems and Luis León Sánchez after a broken elbow.
