Playstation Patch File

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Playstation Patch File ( PPF ) is a file format for patches of PlayStation -Play. It was developed in 1999 by a group of crackers to distribute their patches that make it possible to bypass PlayStation games' copy protection mechanisms. These patches are applied to the CD images of the corresponding Playstation games using the ApplyPPF or PPF-O-MATIC programs .

Today the format is increasingly used for legal purposes, partly because of its ease of use.

There are three different versions of the PPF format. These are referred to as PPF1, PPF2 and PPF3, with the numbers representing the version of the MakePPF used.

The format is completely open and subject to the GPL .

To create a PPF patch with Make PPF, the user must specify two binary files:

  • the original of the binary
  • the modified version of the binary file above

MakePPF detects the differences between these two files and re-encodes them into the PPF format. Other users who only have the original binary file can in turn obtain the modified version of the binary file by applying the PPF file that has just been created.
