PmWiki is PHP -based free wiki software developed by Patrick Michaud for the Texas A&M University website . PmWiki is licensed under the GPL .

Focus of development

PmWiki was developed as a particularly easy to install and configure web content management system . The software focuses on simplicity of use by so-called “naive” authors in order to lower the threshold that could prevent people with little IT experience from using a wiki. "Flat" sequential files are used as the data system, as an SQL connection was deliberately avoided due to the simplicity that is propagated . This considerably simplifies, for example, the installation and migration of a wiki to another server.

Development process and dissemination

The development of Pmwiki as an open source project began in July 2002 when the first version was released. Version 1.0, which was released in June 2004, was an important milestone. Up to now, updates appear at short intervals (a few days to 1 month) that bring the latest improvements and are easy to install.

Patrick Michaud decided to redesign PmWiki 2.0. Wikis that were created under previous versions can be migrated automatically.

features

Skins

PmWiki offers a skin system that allows you to adapt the user interface to your own needs with a high degree of flexibility, both in terms of functionality and appearance.

Access control

An important feature of PmWiki is the ability to set up password protection for individual pages or groups of pages, for example in order to obtain defined zones for collaboration between certain groups, such as in a company intranet .

In PmWiki 1.0, access control works exclusively via content-related passwords. PmWiki 2.0 has added simple user-based authentication that provides the basic functionality. However , there is no convenient user-related rights management, such as TWiki or MediaWiki offer.

The password protection or the assignment of authorizations can be used for the defined zone for reading, writing, uploading and assigning a password. The password protection in PmWiki 2.0 can also be extended to the downloading of uploaded files.

PmWiki 2.0 also has a simple upload versioning system, which allows old file versions to be archived securely.
