Pocket Park in Seattle

A pocket park ( German mutatis mutandis: pocket-park , even pocket park also vest-pocket park ) is a small open space in the urban context, which is designed landscaping and previously "dead" as the angle was not perceived or broke was. These miniature green spaces between densely built houses represent a new type of open space. The functions and tasks of the small green spaces are dependent on the uses surrounding them. They serve as a lounge or play area, and in some cases they are also managed. The variety of uses of the vest pocket parks is severely limited due to their limited size. In the course of urban renewal processes In the meantime, unused or underused open spaces are being developed as pocket parks in order to give a positive impulse to the surrounding residential areas.

The value of urban space is increasingly recognized and - often through movements of grass roots  - converted into habitable places. It is possible to create simple flower beds as well as artistically and architecturally ambitious solutions. Garden designers and visual artists often make their work available free of charge. The increased attraction of the residential area is not only beneficial for the direct residents; Urban neglect, vandalism and wear and tear are also prevented by well-designed and well-tended urban spaces .

Recently, smaller green spaces have also become consciously used to design and loosen up new building areas, e.g. B. from conversion areas of former industrial wastelands, railway areas, parking lots, etc. used. They serve the planned improvement of the residential and office environment and often represent a marketing-relevant additional benefit for the property developers and property developers. Examples of this are the pocket parks in the Phoenix-West office location (Dortmund) and the somewhat larger connecting parks between Rebstockpark , Europagarten and Gallusviertel , which is currently under construction Europaviertel (West) in Frankfurt am Main.
