Poenigeturm

The Poenigeturm is one of the former twelve towers of the Menden city fortifications. It was built from 1271 to 1344. The four-story tower is made of quarry stone and is covered with a pyramid hood.

The tower was first mentioned in 1344. The city fortifications fell into disrepair in the 18th century. The remains were demolished between 1790 and 1813. The Poenigeturm was preserved next to the Teufelsturm and the Rentschreiber Tower . In 1983 the tower was declared a monument.

Since July 2011, after interior restoration and repair, the tower has been accessible again by adding a staircase with platforms on two levels and accessible to the population at certain times. An elevator could not be installed on and in the tower for reasons of monument protection.
