from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Poignard de tranchée Mle 1915 is an improvised combat knife , a so-called trench dagger, developed during the First World War . The weapon was used by the soldiers of the French army for close combat . The weapon was intended to replace the makeshift Clou français and was replaced in 1916 by the Couteau Poignard Mle in 1916 .

background

The French army did not have a suitable combat knife for trench warfare. The Poignard Baïonnette Lebel M1886 / 14 was a long stiletto and served as the basis. To ensure better handling, the blade of the stiletto was shortened and given a wooden handle. From a blade of the Poignard-Baïonnette Lebel M1886 / 14 three blades of the Poignard de tranchée Mle 1915 could be created. The weapon did not prove itself in action and often broke off.
