Poimen
Poimen (also Poimen the Great , Abba Poemen , ancient Greek Ὁ Ἅγιος Ποιμήν , * around 340 in Egypt; † allegedly 450) is one of the most famous Christian monks of late antiquity, alongside Antonios and Makarios . He is counted among the so-called desert fathers and is considered a saint in all Orthodox churches and in the Catholic Church .
He had six brothers, including the well-known Anubios (the oldest) and Paisios, with whom he entered an Egyptian monastery. They were so strictly devoted to asceticism that they did not show themselves to their mother when she was visiting the monastery.
In the Apophthegmata Patrum there are more than a hundred sayings that are attributed to him. Poimen had a large number of students who expressly refer to poimen in their sayings.
