Peter Manns
Peter Manns (born March 10, 1923 in Oberhausen ; † April 23, 1991 in Mainz ) was a German Roman Catholic priest and church historian . He researched and published mainly about the “father in faith” Martin Luther, whom he valued from a Catholic point of view .
Life
After studying theology in Würzburg , Bonn and Mainz , Manns was ordained a priest in 1951. He was a student of Joseph Lortz , with whom he also received his doctorate , and later for many years his collaborator. He was an honorary professor at the University of Mainz . As Lortz's successor, he became director of the Mainz Institute for European History in the Department of Western Religious History. His monographs , essays and lectures on Martin Luther (the latter often in the context of ecumenical events) contributed to interdenominational understanding about the significance of the reformer today and to the Catholic- Lutheran dialogue.
According to Martin Honecker, he made a special effort to develop Luther's “understanding of justification, of love and hope, his attitude towards the saints” and even called Luther “father in faith”. He stands for a wing of the Catholic Luther evaluation.
In 1981 he was one of the signatories of the Heidelberg Manifesto .
