Point to point interface

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Point to Point Interface (PPI) is a proprietary interface of the Simatic S7-200 devices from Siemens . It can be used to connect programming devices (PGs), operating and display devices ( HMI ) and to communicate with other S7-200 devices and with S7-300 / 400 devices.

The interface is based on the EIA-485 standard (formerly RS-485 ) and the Profibus standards (IEC 61158 and EN 50170). PPI networks can be set up in line or star topology . Up to 32 masters can be connected to a network, the number of slaves is not limited. The network can be extended via RS-485 repeaters.

The programming and HMI devices usually act as masters for the S7-200 devices, but more complex configurations are also possible, so that S7-200 devices communicate with each other as master and slave or S7-300 / 400 devices take on the role of a master.
