Karl Düsterberg

Karl Düsterberg (born Kuczera ; born May 7, 1917 in Deutsch-Krawarn , Hultschiner Ländchen ; † July 14, 2014 in Rheine ) was a German fighter pilot and entrepreneur.

Life

Youth and World War II

Since 1933, Düsterberg worked in Liegnitz and Berlin , after which he began an apprenticeship as a gardener in Karl Foerster's nurseries in Bornim near Potsdam . After the invasion of Poland in 1939, he was drafted into the air force and deployed with a flak unit in Lingen an der Ems . He then completed his training as a fighter pilot with the Heinkel He 111 P and the Heinkel He 111H with the IV. Group of Kampfgeschwader 55 (KG 55) in Dijon and was assigned to the VIII. Air Corps on the Eastern Front in early 1943. Since March 1943 he flew as a radio operator and gunner operations with the 9th Squadron / KG 55 in the Kirowohrad and Stalino area in retreat fights of the Luftflotte 4 and from April 1943 missions with the 14th Squadron / KG 55 on the Heinkel He 111H-16.

In 1944 he reported to the Kampfgeschwader 200 (KG 200) and flew from Bergamo missions in northern Italy with the 2nd Staffel / KG 200 "Kommando Carmen" as a pilot of a Junkers Ju 188 . In mid-May 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Americans in Tesimo and then transferred to a British prisoner-of-war camp in Rimini . In October 1945 he was released in Bolzano , traveled to the British zone of occupation and from then on lived in Rheine.

Foundation of apetito

After the end of the war, Karl Düsterberg served bread rolls, completed his training as a garden architect, built poly tunnels and ran a fruit and vegetable trade as a businessman. On April 1, 1958, he founded Karl Düsterberg KG in Rheine , which produced complete frozen meals in aluminum bowls, and developed this company into an international group in the decades that followed. In 1969 he introduced the catering process and in 1971, in collaboration with the German Red Cross, he developed meals on wheels for senior citizens living at home. In 1982 he handed over the management of the company to his eldest son Wolfgang Düsterberg (* 1946) and became chairman of the supervisory board. In 1991, the company was converted into Apetito ready-to- eat stock company. Until his death he was the honorary chairman of the supervisory board. Karl Düsterberg was a member of the main board of directors of the German Deep- Freeze Institute (dti) for many years and was a co-founder of the Wirtschaftsvereinigung Steinfurt e. V.

Foundation, endowment

In 1988 he founded the Karl Düsterberg Foundation with the aim of promoting science, research, education and training in connection with food, food technology, nutrition and nutritional physiology as well as vocational training in the food sector.
