Polacker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Polacker (Italian polacca) was a three-masted sailing ship of medium size native to the Mediterranean , in use from the 16th to the 19th century. The sails consisted of a large latin sail on the foremast , up to three square sails on the main mast and a smaller latin sail with a square sail over it on the mizzen mast . In addition to this striking constellation of sails, one of the special features of this type of ship was that all masts were designed as pole masts so that the yards could be lowered along the entire length of the masts. Sailing ships that were equipped with conventional sails on pole masts were given the prefix "Polacker" for their standard designation, e.g. B. "Polacker brigg ". In recent times, continuous metal masts have also been referred to as "Polackamast".
