PolarNEWS is a German-language information platform for polar areas. With its magazine and website, it is the only platform of its kind that deals with all issues relating to the polar regions, both the Arctic and the Antarctic .
history
PolarNEWS was founded in 2004 by Heiner and Rosamaria Kubny. At this point in time, both had traveled to Antarctica several times for photographic purposes for 7 years and were fascinated by the wild and untamed beauty of the southern polar region. This resulted in two multi-vision shows " Antarctica " (2001) and "In the Empire of the Penguins " (2004), with which they toured successfully at home and abroad.
A few years ago they began to travel and take photos for the northern polar regions and realized that, despite the obvious similarities, the two areas are very different. But they also noticed that because of the fascination that emanated from these icy worlds, many people had a great need for information, which was difficult to satisfy. Much information was not easy to obtain and there was no real central communication platform, especially in Switzerland. So in 2004 they decided to launch the “PolarNEWS” magazine in Switzerland to fill this gap. The magazine has also been online since 2008 and regularly provides everything you need to know about the polar regions. Over time, PolarNEWS gained more and more popularity beyond the borders of Switzerland and it was therefore decided that from December 2012 the magazine should also appear in Germany with an initial print run of 30,000 copies. Within two years, the number of copies for Germany rose to 40,000 copies (as of December 2014).
platform
The “PolarNEWS” magazine appears twice a year free of charge with a circulation of around 75,000 copies and is sent directly to subscribers. Articles from various areas of the polar regions such as people & politics, research & environment, fauna & flora, polar expeditions & history and technology & travel are published by various authors. It is very important that the articles are written by qualified people who deal personally with the subject. Since “PolarNEWS” is strictly politically and denominationally neutral, topics can also be discussed controversially, for example the extraction of mineral resources in the Arctic Ocean or the current discussion about the borders in the Arctic. The magazine appears in booklet form as a high-quality print on coated paper. Since November 30, 2012, the PolarNEWS magazine has also been distributed in Germany with a circulation of 40,000 (as of December 2014) and a layout that has been adapted accordingly.
"PolarNEWS" has also been online since 2008 and publishes current reports in German that relate to the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The contents of the news are taken from official press releases from various polar stations and institutions and published on the website with their own images. It is important that all articles are scientifically sound and also published in independent media. Since November 2014, a website has also been online in English with the same articles, but in English and with a new, more modern layout.
The content
In terms of content, the magazine deals with all aspects of polar nature, research, history and culture. Corresponding background information is also provided, which is intended to give the reader a holistic picture and is intended to promote opinion-forming. Usually, several areas are covered per issue, i.e. at least one article from biology (for example a portrait of a penguin species ), from history (for example the race to the South Pole ), from technology (for example a portrait of the 50 Years of Victory ) and other articles. Furthermore, modern journeys and expedition trips or articles on the subject of "photography" are published.
In contrast to this, current reports and press releases from scientific press publishers and also from polar organizations are displayed on the PolarNEWS website. With the help of links to the various homepages, interested readers are taken to the original reports on the one hand, and to related web pages on the other, which offer general information on the various areas of the polar regions. The offer is constantly being expanded.
further activities
In addition to its communication platform via magazine and website, PolarNEWS also offers information events, lectures and multivision shows. The aim is to raise people's awareness of the importance of the polar regions and the problems they face.
