In 2005 Guatemala created the legal basis for the establishment of a civilian intelligence service , which will replace the intelligence services of the military and the office of the state president in investigating organized crime (including youth gangs) and drug trafficking. For the new Dirección General de Inteligencia Civil (DIGIC), the separation requirement between the police and the intelligence service will apply.
