Politické ústředí

The organization Politické ústředí , German Political Center , abbreviated PÚ, was a non-communist-oriented Czech resistance group that fought against the National Socialist occupation of Czechoslovakia during the time of the Protectorate . It was active from 1939 to 1940. From 1940 it was one of the three components of the umbrella organization ÚVOD .

History and activity

The organization, which began to form in the spring of 1939, consisted of representatives from all political coalition parties in pre-war Czechoslovakia with the exception of the communists. The original intention was to build it up as an umbrella organization of the resistance, which is why there was no particularly branched structure and the group only united around 90 people. The group held in close contact with the the emergent resistance abroad, especially to the government in exile of Edvard Beneš in London, with the help of couriers and radio transmitters. Contacts also existed with some members of the Protectorate Government, in particular with Prime Minister General Alois Eliáš .

The aim of the group was to restore state sovereignty and democratic parliamentary order in Czechoslovakia. The group concentrated on passing on important intelligence information, they organized escape routes abroad, issued illegal documents, participated in the preparation of demonstrations, etc. From the end of 1939 the Gestapo made several arrests , which had weakened the organization considerably. Some activists were able to flee abroad, the rest took part in the resistance work within the framework of the ÚVOD group , which they were involved in establishing in early 1940 and building it up into an umbrella organization for the resistance.

Leading the group

The leadership of Politické ústředí consisted of Přemysl Šámal and Vladimír Klecanda , other leading figures included Ladislav Rašín , Jaromír Nečas , Ferdinand Richter , František Hála , Ladislav Karel Feierabend , Prokop Drtina , Vlastimil Klíma and General Bedřich Neumidann (who represented the army) in ÚVOD the group was represented by Antonín Pešl , Václav Holý and Vladimír Krajina .
