Political Atlas of Switzerland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Political Atlas of Switzerland is published by the Federal Statistical Office. It is a tool for those who want to spatially analyze historical and current voting and election results: dividing lines such as the “Röstigraben” or the urban-rural contrast and the strongholds of the parties are made visible on the maps at a glance - thanks in part the small-scale representation at community and district level. The Political Atlas of Switzerland is available in German and French.

history

The Federal Statistical Office, founded in 1860, used thematic maps for the visual representation of statistical results. The "Graphical-Statistical Atlases" published in the context of the national exhibitions of 1897 and 1914 are particularly important in the early epoch. These illustrate statistical facts of the time in various areas.

A Political Atlas of Switzerland was published on CD-ROM for the first time in October 2004. In addition to an interactive atlas, which visualized the results of all national council elections and federal referendums since 1866 on several levels, the atlas also contained a data pool. Around 1000 files were archived in it, mostly with municipal and district results of the National Council elections since 1971 and the results of the federal referendums since 1981. In addition, the election and voting results at canton level since 1919 and 1866 were also available.

As part of the visualization of political election and voting results, the results of the National Council elections on election Sunday were presented live and continuously in an online atlas - the election atlas - for the first time in 2007. For comparison and analysis purposes, the electoral atlas also contained around 600 cards with the results of all National Council elections since 1919. In 2011, the live electoral atlas was reissued on the occasion of the most recent elections. In 2012, the FSO also published a new offline edition of the Political Atlas of Switzerland on a USB stick and as an iPad app, which technically replaces the atlas from 2004 and deepens its content.

Legal basis

With the revision of the Federal Law on Geoinformation of October 5, 2007 and its implementing provisions in the Ordinance on Land Surveying of May 21, 2008, the creation of national atlases was declared a federal task.

Information offer

The Political Atlas of Switzerland shows the results of the National Council elections and the federal referendums in around 2,700 interactive maps and supplements them with the associated voter participation. While the free, reduced online version focuses on the election results since 1919 and referendums from the last two decades, the full version on USB stick / iPad shows the data of both the elections and the votes since 1866. In both versions, the results are usually shown at the municipality, district and canton level. Both the election results and the results of the referendums are chronologically accessible on the one hand and are structured by party or subject of the vote on the other. In addition to the interactive map display, all results are available in the form of Excel tables. For all those who want to use the numbers “behind the maps” for their own calculations and analyzes, the atlas provides the necessary data basis. In line with the way in which the National Council elections are held, the election results are updated every four years, while the results of the federal referendums are updated continuously on voting Sundays.
