Polyfill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A polyfill (also polyfiller ) is a code component - mostly written in JavaScript - which is intended to retrofit a newer function not supported by these in older browsers by means of a workaround . For example, features of HTML5 are not available in older browsers. Websites can still use these functions if they provide a corresponding polyfill.

The name “Polyfill” is derived from Polyfilla , the name of a brand for wall filling compound that is widespread in Great Britain (similar to the Moltofill that is widespread in German-speaking countries ). It was created by Remy Sharp for his book Introducing HTML5 in 2009 .
