The Brazilian Pontões Capixabas National Park is located in one of the last zones with Mata Atlântica in the state of Espírito Santo . The 174.96 km² park was formed on December 19, 2002. It is located in the municipalities of Pancas (5 km) and Águia Branca , it can also be reached via São Gabriel da Palha (15 km). It is located in the settlement area of ​​German immigrants from Pomerania .

The island mountains that look like the Sugar Loaf , locally called Pontões , are striking . Capixaba, on the other hand, is the adjective for Espírito Santo.

The climate is semi-humid tropical with a mean temperature of 23 ° C and annual rainfall of 750 to 1250 mm.

In addition to the primeval forest, there are secondary forests in various stages of regeneration. Slow-growing plants live on the rocky "sugar loaves" and can get by with few nutrients, fog or little water, as the rainwater drains off very quickly. There are e.g. B. cacti , tillandsia and other bromeliads . Some of the rare animals are threatened with extinction, mammals Jaguar , Margay (Bergozelot) Jaguarundi , maned sloth , hedgehog and Lontra and the birds Urumutum , Jao ( Tinamous ), black-billed mountain toucan and saffron toucanet .

Environmental problems are deforestation, the expansion of agriculture and settlement and, more recently, the mining of granite rock . The national park creates new forms of work.
