The saffron toucanet ( Pteroglossus bailloni ) is in South America beheimateter woodpecker bird from the family of toucans . It belongs to the genus of the Schwarzarassaris and was first described by Louis Pierre Vieillot in 1819 .

Characteristics and nutrition

For male golden toucans, wing spans of just under 130 cm were measured. The adult weight is 156 to 174 grams, with males and females hardly differing in this regard.

The golden toucan is easy to distinguish from other representatives of the black macaw as it is the only species with mostly saffron-yellow plumage. The beak of the animals is also predominantly yellow, whereas the wing sections are more brownish.

Golden toucans feed mainly on fruits.

distribution and habitat

The golden toucan is found in eastern Paraguay , in the Argentine region of Misiones and in south-eastern Brazil , where it is native to wet and rainforests.

According to the IUCN , the population is "near threatened", which means that the threat is not yet acute. The destruction of the tropical habitat is currently the greatest threat.

Systematics

Since its discovery, there has often been disagreement about the genus of the golden toucan. Originally it was listed as Ramphastos bailloni , in the 30s and 40s a classification in the genus Andigena (blue toucans) was planned. Later it was considered a separate genus with only one species, with the scientific name Baillonius bailloni . In 2004, based on the examination of the genome of the animals, a comparison with other toucans was made, which resulted in a classification as Pteroglossus .
