The Schwarzarassaris ( Pteroglossus ) are a kind of birds from the family of the toucans (Ramphastidae) within the woodpecker birds (Piciformes) and comprises 14 kinds.

Description and way of life

This genus is endowed with the most colorful plumage in the whole family. They have a long, stepped tail that extends beyond the length of the wing and are quite slender. The top is usually blackish or olive green. The rump carmine. A maroon or carmine-red collar is usually found on the neck. Most species have a yellow breast and belly with a red or black and red belt. The upper beak is often strongly toothed. They are also very sociable and populate the jungle in small flocks with whom they spend the night together in tree hollows.

distribution and habitat

The 14 species occur at high altitudes from southern Mexico to Argentina and inhabit dense jungles there. Unlike the green macaws , which belong to the same genus and have a similar body shape, black macaws tend to be inhabitants of moist tropical forests of the lowlands.
