Porta Montalto

The Porta Montalto is a city gate of Palermo in the medieval city wall . It is located in the southeast of the Albergheria district. The city gate was named after the reigning Aragonese viceroy Don Luigi di Moncada, Principe di Paternò and Duca di Montalto .

It was opened in 1638 to replace the nearby Porta Mazara , which became obsolete after the Pescara Bastion was built around 1569. In 1885 the gate was destroyed in riots. The water tower of Porta Montalto integrated into the city wall is still preserved .
