Porta Mazara
The Porta Mazara , also Porta Mazzara , was a city gate of medieval Palermo in the southwestern district of Albergheria .
history
The Porta Mazara was built on this site in the 12th century to replace an Arab gate and was restored and expanded by Federico d'Aragona in 1326. In the 16th century, the construction of the Montalto Bastion made it unusable. As a replacement for the gate, the Porta Montalto was built in the immediate vicinity south in 1638 .
When the bastion was demolished in 1885, the old gate was exposed again.
description
The gate has three ogival passages. The two smaller passages are now mostly bricked up. A wall with a round arch was also built in the central passage , which is lower than the original pointed arch. Remnants of frescoes were found in the lunette of this arch.
